The second Shadespire Army I decided to paint was the Orks.
This time I decided to ignore the box art and go with some of my own style, I have always thought a Brutal army of Orks would look great in pure white so I went with that.
Unfortunatly I didn't take any "in progress" images as these minis were painted before this blog was even an idea in my mind. But below you will find images of all 4 of the Orks's included in Shadespire.
The Techniques
It goes without saying you should prime your mini's. Unfortunatly for me I decided on white armor AFTER I had primed the mini in black...next time I would 100% go with white or grey.Base coating:-
Armor: Citadel White Scar (multiple thin coats to prevent chalkyness)
Skin: Citadel Waaagh Flesh
Cape: Citadel Khorne Red
Weapons: Citadel Leadbelcher and Baltazhar Bronze
Wood/Leather: Citadel Rhinox Hide
Fur: 20/80 mix of Citadel Abbadon Black and Citadel Cermaic White
Bone: Citadel Zandri Dust
Next up I had a tricky decision to make, as I started with a very pure white, highlighting was going to be impossible. However I had this idea that I wanted the paint to be over metal plates, so the edge highlighting was actually going to be done with leadbelcher as a faux damage look.
Washing. I decided to wash the whole model (including the white) in nuln oil. Taking extra care to move it off the white armor and into the recesses as fast as possible.
After this was dry I went back over all the armor plates twice with Ceramic White, trying to just highlight the centre of the plates to leave the edges darker. The skin was highlighted with Straken Green around the muscles and then a very small highlight on specific edges (such as the face) with Nurgling Green.
The metals were dry brushed with Necron Compound on the silver and Sycorax Bronze on the bronze parts. I picked out a few details on the Boss Ork (the one in the cape) with gryphon Gold.
Once this detailing was done I went around all the armor with Leadbelcher picking out just the edges (and using the side of the brush) of the plates and anywhere there was a seperation in the armor to create the scratched and damaged metal look.
A simple drybrush of ceramic white with a hint of abbadon black for the fur and then some glazing on the cape with Bugmans Glow down the raised edges finished off the cape nicely.
Now for the fun part, BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD.
The blood on the weapons was actually using 3 different paints, first a dry brushing of Vallejo Dry Blood across the whole length of the blades, brushing from the tip into the handle to create that slashing look. Then Vallejo Wet Blood was applied around just the edges and on the raised details of the blades. Finally BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! was used on just the tips of the cutting edges to create that fresh from battle blood look.
After this all that was left to do was paint the teeth and eyes with ceramic white, wash the teeth in Nuln Oil, paint the tongue Khorne red then highlight with Screaming Pink. Add a dot of khorne red to the eye and I added a few dots of lead belcher to the nuts and bolds around the armor/weapons and dry brushed the bone with Tyrant skull.
The base was a few simple colours, a very thick layer of Agarak Earthshade, then a dry brushing of tryant skull on the bones and a darkened stone colour on the rest.
Then lastly I freehanded the Ork symbols for BLOOD onto the right shoulder of each mini and used Vallejo Matte Varnish to seal the paint ready to play Shadespire!
